History
The Aspden wood and metal multiplying revolving drum semi-backless side cast fishing reel was designed and made by Alan Aspden when he was employed as an instrument engineer for the RAAF at Amberley Air Base Queensland in 1943.
The Aspden’s origin was identified by Mr. Rick Huckstepp who tracked down Alan Aspden in 2000, at his home in Rockhampton Queensland, and who confirmed that he made the Aspden reels when he was based at the RAAF Air Base during WWII. Mr. Huckstepp’s interview is verified by the existence of a letter he wrote to a collector on the 1st of October 2003. As I have the copy of the said letter I took it upon myself to present below an extract from Huckstepp’s informative letter describing the maker of the Aspden reel:
“It was made by Alan Aspden (that is correct spelling) in 1943 when he was an instrument engineer for the RAAF at Amberley Air Base here in Queensland. I found mine (I have 2) in a second-hand shop in Rockhampton QLD in year 2000. It had not long been sold by the owner who I tracked down to an hour in Rockhampton. Alan Aspden was 83 years old then and very frail and ill. I have not bothered to contact him since as I doubt he would have seen the year out. I had him identify the reel but he would not let me take a photograph of him with the reel as he still felt guilty about making them in wartime when he should have been making instruments for the war effort! I didn’t push the point. He was adamant that he made only four reels and that no one else had access to the equipment for making them as he manufactured the dyes for pouring the casts as well turning the spools (it is interesting though that the handlebar is identical to the Castaway reel the appears in AFR somewhere. I was not aware of this when talking with Alan so was unable to investigate that anomaly or perhaps he made the Castaway as well ???)“

George Snowden, a Brisbane tinsmith who, in addition to a Ferguson-style; pivot press lever turntable, also produced a range of models featuring a hook plunger turntable action, and line guide casting configuration. Three models were produced during the 1950s, with different style line guide turntable mechanisms, and drum spools made from Australian silky oak wood or moulded from bakelite. Ladd B. 10/03/2014.

Jeffries side cast reel -c 1930s. According to Bob Dunn’s AFR Issue No. 6 - 1999, Les Jeffries, had worked from 1921 until 1971 as a toolmaker at the Ipswich Railway Workshops and amongst other ‘foreign orders ‘ had made fishing reels. The distinctive feature of this reel is the unusual elevated spring-loaded pivot trigger, Dunn's theory is that Jeffries got the idea for this trigger configuration from a similar, if not identical, mechanism used to open the old-style railway carriage windows.

Backplate diameter 4 1/4'' drum (spool) width 2''; bakelite handle knobs; cast brass forked line guide and Furguson type turntable (pivot); brass optional check; Porpoise stamped on the backplate, J.W. Day Brisbane molded in back of drum (spool); metal parts of brass with exception of the beryllium copper turntable (pivot) leaf spring.

SLIK cast brass and wood side cast reel. Back diameter 4 1/4''; drum (spool) width 2 1/4''; V slot turntable; cast brass metal fittings (nickel plated) SLIK stamped on the back plate. The maker is officially unknown, but probable it was made by Nick Kross, Queensland around 1920.
