This Steelite Nottingham features an interesting brass semi-backplate. There is no reference to this particular model in any Steelite reel pamphlets or advertisements. However, in 2008, this reel was thoroughly examined by myself and Peter Jowett, a Melbourne-based collector, recognised as the primary Victorian source of information for Bob Dunn, author of the book Australian Fishing Reels (1994). Peter and I agreed, at that time, that this particular reel appeared to be a prototype factory-produced by Steelite. We made this assertion because the reel featured a brass semi-backplate; an optional check button that was of a different shape when compared to other Steelite models; and a check cog, which normally is of brass on all Steelite reels, but with this particular reel it is of mild-steel. We concurred that this unusual design was indeed produced by Steelite as a prototype, and the brass semi-backplate was fitted to strengthen the bakelite spindle support, which was prone to cracking when the drum (spool) was under excessive load.
